History:

The James C. Caldwell Community Center has a rich and varied history in North Toledo. Originally founded as the North Toledo Settlement in 1904 by immigrants from Germany and southern Europe, the organization occupied a building on lower Summit St.  Six years later a building at the corner of Erie St. and Suder Ave, was erected to house the organization. In 1919, the organization was renamed the North Toledo Community House (NTCH).

From the original location at Erie and Suder. NTCH moved two separate location on Stickney Avenue, that now house Stickney Hot Dog and an apartment building. In the early years, NTCH was primarily mission was research and data gathering.

Throughout the 1960's NTCH went through some trying years with  executive directors coming and going at a rapid pace.  In 1971, the organization found the guiding force and leadership it needed in Executive Director James C. Caldwell.   As the program grew and flourished it became clear the facility would need improvements or make a move to a larger facility to allow it to continue to serve the community effectively.

The long-range vision became to construct an addition on the existing facility and the organization began a capital campaign.  In 1986 ground was broken on the new addition which included a new gymnasium, administrative office, restrooms and classrooms.  The garage facility was remodeled to accommodate vehicles and the Otto G. Hartman room was remodeled to allow for outreach programs.  Construction of the addition was completed on July 20, 1987 signaling a new era for NTCH.

In late 1999, the NTCH was renamed the James C. Caldwell Community Center, in honor of its Executive Director, James C. Caldwell.
